Hare hound. I have heard that term my whole life, often from guys that hunt cottontails and intend the term as an insult. Oh, I agree that hare leave more scent, but they are often hunted in poor scenting conditions. Some think that a beagle that hunts hare lacks line control on a cottontail, but I have seen hounds accustomed to cottontails that were unable to reach out enough on a big check or keep up to a big running hare. After all, they are all beagles--not hare hounds or cottontail beagles. The good ones should do fine on both! What has been your experience?

A Hare Hound! I'm from Georgia and we run rabbits! Cottontails... lol No insult here. A hare hound to me has always meant a beagle/hound from up north bred to run hare. (need a warm jacket to do that right so I think they were put together a tad different) They seem to be? Gray's Buck - Hare Hound/Beagle and Skullfork Tilly cottontail hound/beagle. There is a gentleman named Mel Faust in Louisiana that raises and trials beagles. (Satsuma Beagles) He has come to Maine and field trialed for years and has won trials and finished many beagles in this State. He has trialed these same hounds all over the south. I suspect he has won many of them I think a Beagle is a Beagle . If they can run a cotton tail, they can run a here and vice versa.

Honestly running hare helps a hound develop confidence, line control, and what it means to stick in a hard check. Because unlike cottontail a hare doesn't hole. A lot of dogs who only run cottontail will abandon a rabbit in favor for another, because they've learned that sometimes the race cannot continue because the rabbit has holed up. Sometimes dogs loose the rabbit that has not held up and assume that it has because they have lost many in the past. Running hare your dog should have check situations and always get things moving again. If you have a Garmin and they don't you can go stand in the check and make them keep working until they find it again; Since it's a hare, you know it didn't hole. Also gives a young dog a taste of what a fast paced race is like, once the dog experiences that thrill it will want to have that same experience again and again. Many times a dog who has run hare, will come back with an extra gear on cotton tail. And yes it may take a day or two for them, to adjust, but the more you go between the tow the faster they adjust. The best dogs I've seen run both efficiently, and with minimal losses. I agree that they are all Beagles, A phenomenal nose on snow doesn't translate to phenomenal nose in the heat of texas, and reverse. I also agree that a hare is stinkier, but because a hare is a long distance runner they also run way out in front of the dogs in most cases. Cotton tail are short distance sprinters, they run and get tired, squat and the dogs get right back on top of them. A hare doesn't have to let a dog ever come near them. They have the endurance to stretch a pack out. So running a stinky hare that's consistently 100-200 yards in front of the pack, vs a not so stinky cottontail that stays 50-100 yards in front of the pack, makes it a wash in my book.

Yeah, any hare I have run do tend to be way out in front of the dogs. I guess that would make for weaker scent as well. I do think a dog with a good nose can run on dry summer days and the snow both, but they are different kinds of bad scent. My best snow dogs have looked for rabbit tracks in the snow with their eyes and figured out that they go with the rabbit scent.

Sure the leggs will help in really deep powder, but once the hare is jumped it will usually spend most of its run on previously run feeder trails. These trails are usually packed pretty well. So long as the dogs run the line they can usually stay on top of the snow. They slash and cut, they sink and have to swim through the powder. But hare hounds don't automatically have long legs, I know that alot of hare folks like a long gate more than they do leggs. An extra half inch of leg will only help a tad. If every hare hound bred produced leggs, id give that some merrit, but beagles are beagles no matter where they are from. I'd buy the heavier coat line before id buy the leggs thing.

I know that I hear the term "hare hound" as an insult from beaglers that would claim to be more interested in line control, but who might also be stylists. There aren't that many places where a person could routinely encounter a cottontail or a hare. In PA we only have a one week hare season and the daily limit is 1. But I have to drive to find them. My friends in Maine see no cottontails. But a good beagle is a good beagle and can adapt, as others have said.in this discussion..
